 ORIGINAL MEMBER OF THE CREOLETTES DIES

RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA — A one-of-a-kind voice passed, today, Friday, January 30. The singer Etta James Jamesetta Hawkins, 73, died after her long battle with cancer. She was well-known for the songs "At Last" and "Something's Got A Hold On Me."

James was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1938, and joined her first group The Creolettes when she was 15 years old. Jean and Abysinia Mitchell were the other members of the group.

Clifton Chenier, regarded as the King of Zydeco, spoke highly of James, a musician who traveled the Chitlin' Circuit with him and other artists in the 1950s.

Singer Beyoncé played James in the film Cadillac Records.
