GILBERT MARTIN

Military veteran, Louisiana Creole and Seventh Ward native Gilbert Martin, author of "Creoles: A Shattered Nation," shared his involvement in a movement to gain federal recognition for the culture of Creole Louisiana and its diaspora. Martin, who came of age in New Orleans during the interwar period and the Great Depression, adopted the platform in promotion of recognition for Louisiana Creole culture in the early 1970s. In this interview, he discussed his broadened awareness of Creole-identified communities in other parts of Louisiana (including southwestern Louisiana and Nachitoches)—and throughout the world.
