RIVERSIDE, CALIFORNIA — A one-of-a-kind voice passed, today, Friday, January 30. The singer Etta James — Jamesetta Hawkins, 73, died after her long battle with cancer. She was well-known for the songs "At Last" and "Something's Got A Hold On Me."

James was born in Los Angeles, California, in 1938, and joined her first group — The Creolettes — when she was 15 years old. Jean and Abysinia Mitchell were the other members of the group.

Clifton Chenier, regarded as the King of Zydeco, spoke highly of James, a musician who traveled the Chitlin' Circuit with him and other artists in the 1950s.

Singer Beyoncé played James in the film Cadillac Records.
